Women's Volleyball Goes 2-1 on First Day of Weekend Tournament

The Culver-Stockton women's volleyball team earned two victories on three attempts during the first day of the Showdown in the Woods at St. Mary of the Woods College Friday in St. Mary of the Woods, Ind.

The Wildcats registered their first victory of the season in the weekend opener with a straight-set decision over Great Lakes Christian College by scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-16. In its second match, C-SC and Indiana Northwest split the first two sets before the Wildcats took the final two sets and the match 25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23. Playing their third match of the day and back-to-back against St. Mary of the Woods, the Wildcats ran out of gas and succumbed in three sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.

In the victory over Great Lakes, Zoe Irvin and Emma Daleen led a balanced attack with nine kills each. Victoria Pollard added eight terminations and a team-best 10 digs.

Lael Temple registered three service aces while Lauren Bloom and Lexia Capes has two service aces. Bloom (13) and Temple (10) combined for 23 set assists.

Defensively, C-SC totaled nine team blocks in the match with Daleen and Faith Hopgood garnered four blocks each.

Pollard led three players in double figures in kills with 19 terminations in the match two victory over Indiana Northwest. Irvin totaled 12 kills while Daleen recorded 10 kills to complete the double digit parade. 

The Wildcats tallied 11 service aces in the match with Bloom recording four and Sidnee Schwarz with three to lead the way. Bloom also had 26 set assists.

Pollard completed the double-double with 15 digs to go along kills. Schwarz paced the way for the Wildcat defense in the back row with 21 digs.

In the final match, Pollard continued to play well, tying for high kill honors with five. She was joined by Layla Lojas. In the back row, Lojas led the way with 10 digs while Pollard had eight digs.

C-SC finishes out the tournament Saturday with three more matches. The Wildcats face Boyce (Ky.) at noon (EDT), Mount Mary (Wis.) at 3 p.m. (EDT) and Indiana-Columbus at 5 p.m. (EDT).
