Vervynck, Defense Lead Wildcats to First-Ever Victory over Saint Ambrose

Jillian Vervynck made 12 saves through three quarters to help the Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team earn its first-ever victory over Saint Ambrose University Saturday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium in Canton, Mo.

Vervynck was pretty steady in the first three quarters of play, stopping 12 of the 20 Bee shots on goal, including five free position shots, through 45 minutes of play.

After Saint Ambrose scored two goals late in the third period, the Wildcat defense answered the call and held the Bees to just one shot in the final 15 minutes with Donelle Wagner, who replaced Verynck at the start of the period, making the save.

C-SC, which entered the game 0-8 against the Bees in their history, took control of the game from the beginning.

After SAU scored the games first goal, C-SC tallied three straight goals in the opening period, and then added two more goal to start the second quarter to take a 5-1 lead.

The Bees broke the string with a goal just over midway through the second quarter, but the Wildcats added a sixth goal at the end of the quarter to take a 6-2 lead to halftime.

The Wildcats were outscored 3-2 in the third period; however, the Wildcats took control in the fourth, outshooting the visitors 6-1 in the quarter and outscoring them 2-0.

Jacee Grinsteinner led the offensive attack with three goals and two assists for five total points. Addison Holm added two goals and one assist, while Brookelyn Lindberg had two goals. Kaleigh Poe chipped in with one goal and two assists.

The Wildcats were outshot 21-19 overall and C-SC committed 27 turnovers to the Bees' 24 miscues. However, the Wildcats held a 27-24 advantage on ground balls and limited the Bees to a 11-for-16 success rate on clears. C-SC was 14-for-16 on clears.

The Wildcats (2-2) embark on a two-game southern road trip beginning Wednesday, March 4, with a game against Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
