Wildcats Secure First Victory with Flurry of Second Half Goals

The Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals between the end of the fhird quarter and the start of the fourth quarter en route to an 11-8 non-conference victory over the University Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) Tuesday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Wildcats and Eutectics were embroiled in a nail-biting one goal game in the third quarter with each team taking turns grabbing a one goal lead on several occasions.

C-SC trailed 6-5 midway through the third quarter when a pair of freshman teamed up to give the Wildcats the momentum.

Jacee Grinsteinner started it all by getting a pass from fellow freshman Brookelyn Lindberg and beat the Eutectic goalkeeper to tie the game.

The score stayed that way until sophomore Addison Holm notched her third goal of the game in the final two minutes of the quarter to give C-SC the lead.

UHSP tied the game for the seventh time early in the fourth quarter but Tennesyn Rohman, making her season debut for the Wildcats, broke the stalemate with her second goal of the game.

A minute later, C-SC's Kylie Garavaglia registered her first goal to give the hosts what seemed to be an insurmountable lead. Lindberg and Rylan Mahone added free position goals afterwards to give the Wildcats four consecutive goals and an 11-7 lead they wouldn't concede.

Goaltenders Jillian Vervynck and Donelle Wagner combined to stop five of 13 shots on goal. Vervynk played into the third quarter and made three saves, while Wagner played the final 28 minutes and allowed just two goals and made two saves.

C-SC outshot the Eutectics by a slim 23-20 margin and forced 31 UHSP turnovers while committing just 23 miscues themselves. The Wildcats held a 30-26 advantage in ground balls while UHSP had had a 13-9 edge in draws.

C-SC (1-2) is scheduled to host Saint Ambrose University this Sunday, March 1, at Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
