Records Falls as Women's Lacrosse Beats Mount Mercy in Heart Play
It was a record-breaking day for the Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The Wildcats set two school records and tied two other school marks in a 24-7 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Mount Mercy University. In addition, sophomore Kaelin Quarles set several individual records for game , season and career during the game.
The 24 goals broke the school record of 23 set against Missouri Valley College in 2023. The Wildcats added 12 assists to go along with those 24 goals, tying a school record for most assists in a game, for 36 total points, also a school record, surpassing the previous mark of 35 set against the Vikings. In addition, C-SC tied the school record for shots in a game with 47
Meanwhile, Quarles, who set the game record with 10 goals earlier this season at Missouri Valley, topped that mark Wednesday by netting 12 goals in the game. In doing so, Quarles also surpassed her record season total of 45 goals last season. Quarles now has 49 goals on the season. Finally, the 12 goals also gives Quarles 94 career goals, surpassing the career-mark of 78 by Sophia Vomund from 2021-23.
Freshman Addison Holm continues to have a break out freshman season, scoring six goals and adding two assists for eight points. Holm is second on the team with 40 goals this season.
Not to be outdone, junior Bella Olson got in on the act and set a school record for assists in a game, registering seven overall. The mark bests the previous mark of five by Makayla Nevarez from 2023. Olson's 17 assists this season also sets a single season record, surpassing the 13 assists from Quarles last season.
Golakeepers Jillian Vervynck and Victoria Acord combined for the victory with each goalie playing a half. Vervynck, making her season debut, faced six shots and made two saves. Acord stared down four shots and made one save.
The Wildcats, who improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Heart, are scheduled to play at Midland University this Saturday, March 22, in Fremont, Neb. The opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
