C-SC's Upset Bid Falls Short as MNU Pulls Away Late
MidAmerica Nazarene outscored the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team 25-15 in the fourth quarter to pull away for an 82-70 victory in the semifinals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday night in Olathe, Kan.
The Wildcats battled with the 10th-ranked and top-seeded Pioneers for three quarters, leading 39-34 at the intermission and trailing by just two points, 57-55 after MNU drained a 3-pointer from near mid-court at the third quarter buzzer.
C-SC didn't blink after the late third quarter basket as Avery Oetting nailed a 3-pointer of her own to start the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats a 58-57 lead.
The Pioneers regained the lead on the ensuing possession and still led 65-62 when Haley Webb scored for the Wildcats to get C-SC to within 65-64 with 5:43 to play in the game.
However, MNU, the regular season conference champion, answered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, 49 seconds to increase its lead to 73-64.
Misora Nambara stopped the bleeding with a pair of free throws for the Wildcats but a conventional three-point play by MNU on t he ensuing possession pushed the deficit to 10 points at 76-66 with 2:13 to play and the Wildcats never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.
The Wildcats, who shot 56 percent from the field, were led by Webb, wo matched her career-high with 16 points. Nambara and Keyara Baerga-Plumey finished with 13 points each, while Oetting ended her career with 11 markers.
C-SC was out-rebounded 35-20 in the game and allowed 18 offensive rebounds to the Pioneers. Allysa O'Connor led the Wildcats with five caroms.
The Wildcats also dished out 20 assists on 27 made field goals. Oetting and Nevaiah Bell-Tenner had five assists each while Nambara totaled four helpers in the game.
The Wildcats conclude the 2025-26 season with a 21-9 overall record. C-SC recorded a 14-6 conference record, which was good for fourth in the Heart.
