Women's Basketball Can't Hold Fourth Quarter Lead in Loss to Columbia

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team was outscored 18-7 in the fourth quarter in dropping a non-conference game to undefeated Columbia College 58-53 Thursday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats never trailed through the first three quarters and entered the final 10 minutes leading 46-40. However, C-SC made just two of its 14 shot attempts in the final quarter while Columbia went 5-for-18 from the field.

The Cougars took their first lead of the game with 47 seconds remaining in the game when Columbia's Ashtyn Klusmeyer drained a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 53-51 lead.

C-SC tied the game on the ensuing possession as Misora Nambara hot a short jumper to tie the game at 53 with 30 seconds left.

The Cougars called time out and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Out of the time out, the Cougars' Lauren Friedrich drilled a trey with eight seconds left to make the score 56-53.

After advancing the ball out of a timeout, the Wildcats worked the ball to Nambara who attempted a game-tying 3-pointer from the right corner with five seconds left. But the shot was off target and Columbia grabbed the rebound.

After a pair of fouls to get in the penalty, the Cougars drained two free throws with one second left to seal the victory.

Avery Oetting scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Wildcats. She was the only player to reach double figures for the Wildcats. Chloe Burnham and Nambara each scored nine points in the game.

Oetting corralled seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats in that category. C-SC was out-rebounded 41-33. Despite the disadvantage on the glass, C-SC held a 10-3 edge in second chance points.

The Wildcats (5-6) jump back into conference play this Saturday, Dec. 13, with a game at Peru State College. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. in Peru, Neb.
