Last Second Shot Sinks Wildcats in Conference Opener

Grand View University's Anna Gossling scored with less than a second remaining to give the Vikings a 69-67 victory over the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Dave Sisam Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Wildcats trailed 55-54 early in the fourth quarter bit went on an 11-2 run to take a 65-57 lead with 4:37 left in the contest.

However, C-SC failed to score over the next three minutes, 56 seconds and the Vikings were able fight their way back into the game. C-SC missed all five shots it took and turned the ball over four times during that drought.

Leaving 65-64, Avery Oetting finally broke the spell with a layup to put the Wildcats up 67-64 with 41 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Grand View's Ellie Knock would score while being fouled with 30 seconds left. Knock made the free throw to tie the game at 67.

C-SC played for the last shot and Oetting drove to the basket with seven seconds left. However, her attempt was short and Grand View grabbed the rebound and went the length of the court with Gossling hitting the game-winner.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start in the game, leading 21-14 after one quarter. But the second quarter was a different story as C-SC made just one field goal in 17 attempts and drained tow free throws while being outscored 19-4 in the quarter to trail 33-25 at the intermission.

Misora Nambara led four Wildcat players in double figures with 14 points. Oetting chipped in with 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds, while Nevaiah Bell-Tenner and Keyara Baerga-Plumey contributed 11 markers each.

The Wildcats, now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, will travel to St. Louis, Mo., this Wednesday, Nov. 19, to battle Missouri Baptist University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
