Late Goal Sinks Efficient Wildcats at Grand View
The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team took advantage of its limited opportunities but it wasn't enough to earn a victory at Grand View University Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Wildcats were outshot 23-6 in the game but was still tied 2-2 with the Vikings before the hosts managed to net the game winner in the 86th minute of regulation to post a 3-2 victory at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Grand View scored a pair of goals in a five-minute span of the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Benedikt Zechmiester scored in the 35th minute and Joshua Grossner tallied a goal in the 40th minute.
However, the Wildcats cut the lead in half just before the intermission when Jackson Richmiller notched his second goal the week in the 44th minute of a corner kick from Kaden Fugate.
The score stayed that way for over 25 minutes in the second half when Tobias Vales entered the game with 17 minutes left in the game.
Vales took just 34 seconds to make a difference after he took a pass from Martin Quijada and tied the game at two.
Despite having 17 fewer shots than the Vikings, the Wildcats held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. C-SC also led in fouls 14-9.
Goalkeeper Tom Freear stopped six of the eight shots put on frame by the Vikings. C-SC was efficient in their shot-making, putting four of its six shots on target.
C-SC returns home this Tuesday, Oct. 22, to face William Penn University at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
