Wildcats Charge Past Yellowjackets for First Heart Victory

The Culver-Stockton women's volleyball team earned its first conference victory of the season with a three-set sweep over Graceland University at a charged up Charles Field House Thursday night.

The Wildcats improve to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference after upending the Yellowjackets 25-18, 25-19, 25-19. Graceland falls to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the league.

C-SC opened the match with a strong attacking game in winning the first set. The Wildcats committed just two hitting errors while registering 11 kills on 23 attempts for a .391 attack percentage.

The Wildcats totaled 12 errors combined over the next two sets to go with 24 kills on 65 attempts for a .185 attack percentage, which was enough to keep the visitors on the outside looking in.

Victoria Pollard led the Wildcat offensive attack with 11 kills while Zoe Irvin and Jetzabelle Rivera garnered seven kills each. Irvin and Rivera combined for a .286 attack percentage while Pollard had a .231 percentage.

C-SC also used a strong serving game in the victory with eight service aces overall, including six from senior Lauren Bloom. Bloom also added 16 set assists.

Defensively, Jaysie Baez reached double figures with 11 digs. Pollard just missed a double-double, finishing with nine digs, while Mikayla Ziemanski totaled five block assists for C-SC, which had six team blocks.

The Wildcats will step outside the conference this weekend for a non-conference match at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, Sept. 13. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Mabee Fieldhouse.
