Wildcats Finish Second in Own Invitational; Straus Hits B Standard in 400 Hurdles
Delaney Straus finished in the points in five different events, including hitting a provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meters hurdles, to help the Culver-Stockton women's track and field team to a second place at the Culver-Stockton Invitational Friday afternoon at Richeson Track.
The Wildcats garnered 119.5 team points to finish a distant second behind Washington University, which had 248 team points. Central Methodist ended with 86.5 points to place third, while Columbia College finished fourth with 75.67 points.
Straus placed first in two events during the day, winning the javelin with a throw of 116 feet, 7 inches, and capturing the 400 hurdles. In that event, Straus broke the school record with a time of 1:02.56, which is below the provisional qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships.
Straus also placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.71 seconds, sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches, and seventh in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
Faith Younce also set a school record Friday, finishing first in the 10,000-meter run in a record time of 43:32.07. Younce also placed second in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 13:13,71.
Zoi Smith helped out the team cause by receiving points in seven events, including tying her own school record in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet. Kinlie Judd matched Smith's effort with a vault of 10 feet as well.
In other events, Smith placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 104 feet, f4 inches, sixth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 14:30.88, seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56 seconds.
Smith also placed eighth in three events, the shot put with a mark of 35 feet, 0 1/2 inches, the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:16.81, and the 5000-meter run with a time of 24:57.77.
Abagail Mooney finished third and fourth in the high jump and the pole vault, respectively. In the high jump, Mooney recorded a mark of 5 feet, 1 1/4 inches, while in the pole vault she hit 9 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
Emma Berry placed in two distant run-in events, placing second in the 10,000 with a time of 44:40.77, and fifth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 14:22.69. Emma Staats was the other Wildcat to receive points, finishing fourth in the javelin with a throw of 107 feet, six inches.
The Wildcats will have several team members participate in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday and Thursday, April 23-24. Then, the full team will compete in the Vikings Classic this Friday, April 25, at Grand View University in Des Moines. that meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
