Smith Sets School Mark in Pole Vault to Lead C-SC at Mustang Open
The Culver-Stockton women's track and field team competed in the Mustang Distance Carnival and Open at Mount Mercy University Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Wildcats turned in a pretty good weekend with 16 top eight finishes in 12 different events. Among the highlights was one school record, three personal best marks and two top season marks.
Zoi Smith set the school record in the pole vault, becoming the first female to top the 10 foot mark. Smith finished fourth overall with mark of exactly 10 feet. In that are event, Kinlie Judd placed seventh with a mark of 9 feet, 0 1/4 inches, while Abigail Mooney placed eighth with a mark of 8 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
The three personal bests were all achieved in the 1500-meter run with the runners finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Malia Carmack was the leader of that group, placing third overall in a time of 5:29.65. Faith Younce finished behind Carmack with a time of 5:31.04, while Emma Berry was fifth with a time of 5:35.31.
In addition to placing in the pole vault, Mooney also recorded top five finishes in the high jump and the triple jump. Mooney placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11 inches, and fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 7 3/4 inches.
Delaney Straus also placed in three different events over the weekend. Straus placed second in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 10 3/4 inches. In the 800, Straus placed third overall with a time of 2:16.81, while finishing fourth in the javelin, tossing the spear 115 feet, 9 inches.
Donyall Sharp finished in the top eight in two different events, finishing third in the shot put with a season-best 36 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Sharp also placed eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 137, feet, 7 inches.
In other events, Carmack placed seventh in the 400 with a time of 1:06.13, while in the relays, C-SC placed second in the 4x100 with a time of 53.70 seconds, and third in the 4x400 in a season-best 4:15.15.
The Wildcats are scheduled to host the Culver-Stockton Invitational this Friday, April 18, at Richeson Track inside Ellison Poulton Stadium. The first events are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
