Straus, Younce Hit Qualifying Standards at Finals Week Invitational
Delaney Straus and Faith Younce each posted provisional qualifying standards in their respective events to help the Culver-Stockton women's track and field team place fourth at the Finals Week Invitational held at Saint Ambrose University Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats finished with 80 total points in the seven team event at the Wellness and Recreation Center. Saint Xavier won the team title with 139 total points.
Straus punched her ticket to the indoor championships early next year during the 800-meter run at the end of the pentathlon. Straus smashed the school record with a time of 2:17.23 to win that event and finish second in the pentathlon with a school record 3,128 points. That point total is the 11th highest in the NAIA to date this season.
The next day, Straus set another school record in the 600-meter run, finishing first overall with a time of 1:37.94. Malia Carmack placed fourth overall in that event with a time of 1:51.05, which is a personal best.
Meanwhile, Younce finished the 3000-meter race walk in first place in a time of 17:06.35 to hit the B standard. Emma Berry placed third in the event with a time of 19:46.83.
In the field events, Donyall Sharp captured the weight throw event with a personal best toss of 44 feet, 11 inches. Mackenzie Bryan finished earned points in both the weight throw and the shot put, finishing seventh in both events. Bryan set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 2 3/4 inches. She had a mark of 32 feet, 1 inch in the weight throw.
The Wildcats are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, in the Battle at the Hive at Saint Ambrose University. The first events are slated to begin at 11 a.m.
