Women's Track and Field Begins Season on High Note
The Culver-Stockton women's track and field team began its indoor season by setting two school records and four personal bests during the Cornell Winter Classic in Mount Vernon, Iowa, Friday night.
The Wildcats recorded 134 points to claim the team championship over the five collegiate teams competing in the event. Cornell finished second with 112 points while Upper Iowa has 99 points. Mount Mercy (92) and Luther (70) completed the field.
Delaney Straus won two individual event titles and finished second in a third to lead the Wildcats' effort. Straus finished first and set a school record in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:04.57, smashing the previous mark by 24 seconds.
Straus also earned top two finishes in two field events, winning the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 6 1/2 inches, and placing second in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 0 1/4 inches.
Emma Smith etched her name in the record book by winning the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.91 seconds. That broke the previous record of 7.99 by Paige Bray in 2016.
Two other athletes claimed individual titles for the Wildcats. Malia Carmack won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:55.51, while Faith Younce won the mile run with a time of 6:10.09. Caroline Lindsey finished second in the 600 with a time of 2:12.44, and Emma Berry placed second in the mile with a time of time of 6:21.27.
Berry also set a personal best in the 3000-meter run, finishing the race in 12:44.10, while Kinlie Judd set a personal best in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet, 0 1/4 inches, tying her own school record.
The Wildcats are slated to compete in the Finals Week Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14, at Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
