Late First Half Goals Carry Women's Soccer to 2-1 Victory over Harris-Stowe
Two goals in the final third of the first half propelled the Culver-Stockton women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Harris-Stowe State University at Ellison Poulton Stadium Saturday night.
The Wildcats yielded the first goal in the 24th minute on Harris-Stowe's only shot of the game. A pass back to the C-SC defense went awry and the Hornets took advantage as Sherasade Meghezi was able to maneuver around C-SC goalkeeper Sam Link and poke the ball into an empty net for a 1-goal lead.
However, the Wildcats, who outshot the Hornets 13-1, including 8-1 in the first half, tied the score in the 35th minute when Rian Moore picked up a deflected pass and beat the Hornet goalkeeper for your fourth goal of the season.
Then, just before halftime, Halle Jennex sent a cross to the middle of the penalty area where Lexi Clark put a shot of goal.
The Hornets made the initial save but the rebound bounced right back to Clark who buried the shot for her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
The Wildcats protected that lead throughout the second half, not allowing the visitors any shots and controlling play for the final 45 minutes.
The Wildcats held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks, including a 7-0 advantage in the second half. Only eight total fouls were called in the game with Harris-Stowe committing five of them.
C-SC. (3-0) will travel to Sioux Center, Iowa , this Wednesday, Sept. 3, to face Dordt University. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
