Women's Soccer Can't Protect Lead for Second Straight Week
For the second straight week, the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team failed to protect a 1-0 lead in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Benedictine College scored twice in the final five minutes Saturday night to escape with a 2-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over the Wildcats at Poulton Stadium. Last week, Grand View (Iowa) netted two goals in the final six minutes to grab a 2-1 victory in Des Moines, Iowa.
After a scoreless first half that saw C-SC outshoot the Ravens 4-2, the Wildcats broke through in the 51st minute when a penalty kick was called on Benedictine when a foul occurred in the penalty area off a C-SC corner kick.
Jody Ellis buried the free kick in the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give the hosts a one goal advantage.
The lead stayed that way until the 85th minute when the Ravens caught a break deep in the C-SC end of the field. A shot by Emma Strecker ricocheted off a C-SC defender and past Wildcat goalkeeper Courtney Croghan to tie the game.
Then, just two minutes, 15 seconds later, Paulina Carles picked up a loose ball and beat Croghan with what turned out to be the game-winner.
The Wildcats were outshot 9-7 in the game, including 7-3 in the second half. C-SC recorded six corner kicks to keep the pressure on the visitors. Five of the six corner kicks came in the second half, including one final one as time ran down under 10 seconds.
C-SC, who is 0-2-1 in its last three games, falls to 2-2-1 overall and in the Heart. The Wildcats are scheduled to play a non-conference game this Wednesday, Oct. 14, at home against Saint Ambrose (Iowa). Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
