Women's Lacrosse Falls Short at Ottawa Despite Quarles' Big Day

The Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team allowed six unanswered goals late in the third quarter and early inf the fourth quarter in a 14-9 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Ottawa University Sunday afternoon at AdventHealth Field in Ottawa, Kan.

The Wildcats, who trailed 7-5 at the intermission, drew even with the Braves at seven goals goals each on a pair of Kaelin Quarles goals in the third quarter. Quarles, who had seven goals in the game, scored at the 9:22 mark and the 5:04 mark of the quarter to tie the game.

However, the Braves finally found the back of the net just over a minute later to re-take the lead and added one more just before the end to the quarter to lead 9-7 with 15 minutes left.

In the fourth, Ottawa netted four more goals before Quarles broke the string with her sixth goal of the game. 

Quarles added one more goal with 2:08 to play to bring the Wildcats to within four at 13-9, but the Braves cemented the victory with an insurance goal with 93 seconds left in the match.

In addition to her game-high seven goals, Quarles finished with a game-best 12 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Quarles notched her seven goals on 12 shots.

Bella Olson and Addison Holm contributed the other two goals for the Wildcats while Holm and Kaleigh Poe recorded one and two assists, respectively.

The Wildcats forced eight of the 18 turnovers by the Braves while committing 17 turnovers themselves. C-SC also held a 37-28 advantage in ground balls but committed 18 fouls to the Braves' nine.

Two the Wildcats' goals came on free position shots while Ottawa's had six goals off 10 free position shots. The Braves outshot the Wildcats 33-26 overall with a 28-20 edge on shots on goal.

The Wildcats, 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the Heart, are slated to play their regular season finale this Wednesday, April 9, at home against Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP). Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
