Women's Basketball Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Post Home Victory over Clarke
The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to earn a 72-65 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Clarke University Monday night at Charles Field House.
The Wildcats trailed the Pride 40-25 at the intermission after being outscored 27-14 in the second quarter. However, a big third quarter where C-SC held a 24-12 advantage got the hosts to within 52-49 with 10 minutes to play.
In the fourth quarter, Clarke scored the first two points on two free throws with 9:19 remaining; however, the Pride was go over four minutes without scoring to go from up 54-49 to down 60-54 with 5:15 to play. The 11-0 run was highlighted by four points from Avery Oetting and a 3-pointer by Katie Webb.
The Pride clawed their way back to with a single point on three different occasions, the last at 64-63 with 56 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Katie Webb drilled her third 3-pointer of the game to increase the lead to 67-63 with 33 seconds left.
Clarke was turned away on its next offensive possession and Webb split a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to up the lead to 68-63. Oetting the Misora Nambara drained four straight free throws over the final eight seconds to seal the victory.
Webb finished the game with a career high 24 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Oetting, who had two points in the first half, scored 17 after halftime and finished with 19 markers and a team-high six assists. Nambara chipped in with 10 points.
C-SC, which was slated to play at Mount Mercy University on Wednesday, will now face the Mustangs on Thursday, Feb. 13, after the original date was scrapped due to the forecasted winter storm that is expected t hit the region on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
