Wildcats Can't Overcome Second Quarter Scoring Woes

A cold stretch in the second quarter doomed the Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team in a 76-65 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Grand View University Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House.

Trailing 21-14 after the first quarter, the Wildcats opened the second period with an 8-0 run, culminated on a a basket by Katie Webb with 8:23 left in the quarter to give C-SC a 22-21 lead.

However, the Wildcats would go ice cold from the field over the next four minutes 53 seconds, missing six consecutive shots and committing three turnovers on the next nine possessions.

Meanwhile, the Vikings seemingly couldn't miss during that stretch, going six-for-six from the field with three 3-pointers to run off a 15-0 run and build a 36-22 advantage.

Grand View eventually led 42-26 at halftime and grew its lead to as much as 20 points in the third quarter before the Wildcats made a at the end of the quarter to get within 59-48. C-SC would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the game.

The Wildcats placed three players in double figures with Avery Oetting leading the way with 13 points. Misora Nambara and Webb added 10 points each while Webb also grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double.

The loss snaps the Wildcats' seven-game home winning streak and drops their overall record to 10-9 overall and 7-8 in the Heart. C-SC is scheduled to play at William Penn University this Wednesday, Jan. 29, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
