Wildcats take No. 20 MNU to Wire before Falling 62-58 in Overtime

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team had a tough assignment as it resumed its season Thursday night against 20th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan.

The Wildcats gave the Pioneers all it could handle before succumbing 62-58 in overtime at the Cook Center. C-SC was outscored 8-4 in the overtime period and made just just three baskets in the final 9:33 of regulation and overtime.

MidAmerica Nazarene led 33-27 at the intermission but the Wildcats used a strong third quarter, outscoring the hosts 17-8 in the period, to take a 44-41 lead to the 10 minutes of the game.

A basket by Elly Bentley gave C-SC a 54-48 advantage with 4:33 to play in regulation. However, the Pioneers netted the final six points of the quarter to force overtime.

Avery Oetting's basket with just under four minutes in overtime gave C-SC its final lead of the game at 56-54 before MNU tallied eight of the final 10 points of the game to seal the victory and stay unbeaten in conference play (11-0).

C-SC outscored the Pioneers 27-3 from the 3-points arc, making nine treys to MNU's one 3-pointer. Both teams attempted 21 three-pointers in the game.

The Wildcats, who entered the game second in the Heart on free throw percentage at 77.6 percent as a team, struggled from the line, making just 11 of its 21 attempts (52 percent).

Katie Webb totaled 15 points to lead three Wildcat players in double figures. Misora Nambara and Oetting each collected 12 points each. Nambara added a game-high seven assists, and was one of three C-SC players with three steals in the game. Oetting and Olivia Hopp also had three takeaways in the contest.

The Wildcats were out-rebounded 52-31 in the game with Haley Webb coming off the bench to grab six caroms to lead the way. 

C-SC, now 7-6 overall and 4-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, had its game with Missouri Valley this Saturday postponed due to a forecasted winter storm. The Wildcats are scheduled to return to play on Wednesday, Jan. 8, against Central Methodist at Charles Field House. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
