Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Heart Opener at Peru State

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team was outscored 7-2 over the final two minutes, 23 seconds of the second half in dropping its Heart of America Athletic Conference opener 80-75 to Peru State Saturday afternoon in Peru, Neb.

In a game that saw neither team lead by more than five points, the Wildcat found themselves trailing 61-56 entering the fourth quarter after leading by two, 38-36, at the intermission.

C-SC opened the final quarter on a 9-2 run on a basket by Katie Webb with 7:29 remaining in the contest.

The two teams alternated taking leads for the rest of the game with their being 19 lead changes and 16 ties in the game. Trailing 73-71, the Wildcats, tied the game fir a final time on two free throws from Misora Nambara with 2:23 to play.

C-SC forced a Peru State miss on the ensuing possession, but the Bobcats grabbed the offensive rebound, scored and was fouled. The free throw made it a 76-73 Bobcat lead with 1:52 to play and the hosts never trailed again.

After two more free throws by the Bobcats made it a five-point deficit at 78-73, Webb scored with 57 seconds remaining to pull within 78-75.

Again the Wildcat defense forced a miss but again the Bobcats were able to corral the offensive carom to force the Wildcat to foul with 14 seconds left. Peru State made two more free throws to seal the victory.

Webb led four Wildcat players in double figures with 21 points. Nambara added 15 markers while Avery Oetting and Addison Newbon chipped in with 13 points each. 

Newbon grabbed six rebounds to lead C-SC, which was out-rebounded 29-24 in the game. Oetting and Nambara registered five caroms each. Nambara also had a team-high four steals.

C-SC, now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Heart, returns home to begin a three-game homestead against conference opponents Wednesday, Nov. 20, against Graceland University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Charles Field House.
