Victory by Run Rule and Walk Off Highlight Softball Senior Day
One victory by run-rule and another victory by walk off highlighted senior day for the Culver-Stockton College softball team Sunday afternoon at Himsl Field.
The Wildcats got at least one hit from every starter in a 10-2 game one victory to open the twinbill. In the second game, C-SC built a 5-1 lead only to see the Yellowjackets take a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning before the Wildcats plated a run in the seventh and the eighth innings to completed the sweep with a 7-6 victory.
In the opener, Samantha Vetter collected two hits and recorded four runs batted in to lead the offensive attack. Cierra Bush was on base three times with a single and two walks, Lula Sassano scored three runs and Ryley Pecina added two RBI to complement Vetter's day.
In the circle, Cabria Childers registered her third victory in two days by scattering four hits and allowing two runs (one earned). She walked two and struck out four to improve to 15-10 on the season.
Game two started out as if the Wildcats would roll to an easy victory when they took advantage of two Graceland errors to score four unearned runs and take a 4-1 lead after one inning.
C-SC made it 5-1 when Alecki Ulu drilled a solo home run to centerfield in the fifth inning. However, the Yellowjackets rallied for two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
The Wildcats didn't fret and answered the Graceland uprising in the bottom of the inning.
Vetter started the rally with a one out double and moved to third on a ground out by Payton Todd. After Ulu was intentionally walked, Bush lined a double down the left field line to score Vetter to tie the game. Ulu was thrown out at third to end the inning but the game was headed to extra innings.
The Yellowjackets went down in order in the eighth setting the stage for a Wildcat celebration.
Leila Lopez singled to start the inning and Kataleena Hunt hit into a fielder's choice to put Hunt at first with one out.
Sassano followed with a double to right field to put runners at second and third with Lauren Waller coming to the plate.
Waller hit a ground ball to Graceland shortstop Sydney Bears and Bears threw home trying to cut down Hunt. Hunt stopped initially and took a step back towards third, but the throw was wild and Hunt was able to score without incident to give C-SC the victory. If was the fifth unearned run allowed by Graceland in the game.
Bush and Sassano had two his each with Bush recording two runs batted in to lead the offense.
Sophie Stuart went the distance to earn her ninth victory of the season allowing nine hits and six runs. She walked six and struck out four.
The Wildcats, who finish 10-4 at home this season, is currently 26-22 overall and 13-13 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. C-SC is scheduled to conclude the regular season this Tuesday, April 21, at nationally-ranked Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
