Grand View Rallies Past Wildcats In First Game, Sweeps Doubleheader

Grand View University plated six runs over the final two innings to overcome a 6-4 deficit and defeat the Culver-Stockton softball team 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa. The Vikings used that momentum from the first game rally to defeat the Wildcats 11-2 in game two.

In the opener, C-SC trailed 1-0 when they exploded for four runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Paige Kurfman walked to open the inning and Kataleena Hunt delivered a one out double before Cierra Bush singled home Kurfman for the Wildcats' first run.

After Ryley Pecina struck out for the second out of the inning, Lacey Stamper laced a single up the middle to plate Hunt to give C-SC the lead. Bush and Stamper then moved up one base on a wild pitch before Payton Todd drilled a tow-out double to score both runners to give the Wildcats some insurance.

Grand View tallied three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game 4-4 but the Wildcats answered with two runs in the seventh inning to regain the lead.

Pecina began the uprising with a one out single before scoring on a RBI double by Stamper to make the score 5-4.

After Todd grounded out for the second out, Myah Briese walked before Hunter Huddle hit a ground ball that was booted by the Viking shortstop, allowing Stamper to score.

However, Wildcats couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Vikings plated three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman.

Pecina finished the first game with three hits in four at-bats, while Stamper had two hits and two runs batted in. Todd also finished the game with two RBI.

In game two, Grand View scored seven times in the first two innings before the Wildcats got on the board in the top of the fourth with a RBI single by Pecina to make the score 7-1.

But the Vikings had an answer in the bottom of the inning, plating four more runs to make it 11-1 after four.

The Wildcats, who had five hits in the second game, scored its final run in the fifth inning when Karli Dant doubled, moved to third on a single by Carli Scifres, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Haylie Wortham.

C-SC is slated to finish the weekend on Saturday, April 19, with a doubleheader at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
