Ravens Rally to Beat Wildcats in Game One; Sweep Heart Doubleheader
Benedictine College scored four runs in the seventh inning of game one to upend the Wildcats 5-2. Then the Ravens got a no-hitter from pitcher Bailey Selvage in the nightcap to sweep the Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader 9-0 Friday afternoon at Himsl Field.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one when Myah Briese hit a one out solo home run and Lacey Stamper registered two-out RBI single to score Tiffany Lepic, who had doubled.
C-SC hurler Penny Ruiz held the Ravens to one run and five hits over the first six innings. However, in the seventh inning the visitors finally made some noise.
With runners at second and third and one out, the Raven attempted a squeeze bunt. Ruiz pounced on the bunt and fed catcher Briese in time to make the tag and record the second out of the inning.
Against the next batter, Ruiz quickly got ahead 0-2 before a couple of foul balls kept Rhiannon Martin alive before she drilled a three-run homer over the centerfield fence to give the Ravens a 4-2 lead. Benedictine added an insurance run and then held off the Wildcats in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
In game two, the Raven used the momentum from their first game victory and plated four runs in the first and three more in the second to jump to a 7-0. Benedictine plated two more runs in the fifth to end the game due to the run rule.
The Wildcats did not record a hit in the game with the only baserunner reaching on a fielding error by Selvage. The Wildcats struck out eight times in the game.
C-SC won't have much time to think about Friday's happenings. The Wildcats are scheduled to host Baker University this Saturday, March 29, in another Heart doubleheader at Himsl Field. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
