Softball Splits with Waldorf in Home Doubleheader
The Culver-Stockton College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Waldorf (Iowa) University Saturday afternoon at Himsl Field in Canton.
The Wildcats scored four times in the first inning enroute to a 5-3 victory in the opening game. In game two, C-SC outhit the Warriors 10-7 but were upended 4-3.
After spotting Waldorf a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats responded with a four-run inning of their own.
Cierra Bush reached on an error with one out and stole second. Bush advanced to third on a passed ball as Kataleena Hunt walked to put runners at the corners. Hunt then stole second and Ryley Pecina drilled a two-run single to tie the game at two runs each.
Selina Guzmen followed with a two-run homer to right, her second of the season, to score Pecina and give the Wildcats the lead for good.
The Warriors plated a run in the second inning to get within 4-3, however, the Wildcats put an insurance run on the board in the third when Sophia Ashby hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Hunt.
Makayla Slavik did the rest for the Wildcats in the circle, limiting Waldorf to six total hits, including only two hits after the second inning. Slavik pitched around four walks and struck out two in earning her third victory in seven decisions.
Hunt and Pecina each collected two hits for the Wildcats, who registered just six hits in the game off of Warrior starter McKenna Mentink.
In the nightcap, Waldorf scored all four runs in the second inning, getting four of its seven total hits in the frame. The big blow was a bases-loaded triple by Paige Pierson.
The Wildcats netted single runs in each of the first three innings of play.
Pecina plated Lacey Stamper with a groundout in the first inning; Guzman scored on a sacrifice fly by Bush in the second inning, and Guzmen drove home Stamper with a RBI single in the third inning.
C-SC recorded hits in every inning but the fourth, getting 0 hits in all, but leaving seven runners on base.
In the sixth inning, the Wildcats, trailing by a run, threatened as Guzman singled with one out and Bush reached on a fielder's choice to third with pinch runner Shelby Daniels going to third to put the tying and go-ahead runners on base.
Bush then stole second to put the potential winning run in scoring position, but Waldorf's Maddie Dalke struck out Myah Briese and induced a groundball back to the circle by pinch hitter Grace Utz to preserve the lead.
In the seventh, Hunt doubled with two out to put the tying run in scoring position for the second straight inning. However, Pecina flied out to left to end the game.
Hunt, Guzman, and Stamper each collected three hits to lead the Wildcat offensive attack. Lauren Sinks suffered the loss in the circle despite scattering seven hits while walking three and striking out seven.
C-SC (7-13) is scheduled to host another non-conference doubleheader Sunday, March 17, against Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) at Himsl Field. The first pitch for the first game is slated to be thrown at 12 p.m.
