Wildcats Take First Two Sets Before Falling to Morningside in Five

The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball team won the first two sets of Friday night's Heart of America Athletic Conference match at Morningside University.

But it was the Mustangs who were celebrating at the end of the night after a come-from-behind 21-25, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19, 15-11 victory over the Wildcats at the Verdoorn Sports Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Wildcats recorded 14 less kills than the Mustangs (65-51) and Morningside garnered 10 more attempts (147-137) in the match. C-SC had one less hitting error, 25, than the Mustangs, 26.

Cooper Varner led the Wildcat attack with 18 kills on a team-high 41 attempts. He registered seven errors for a .263 attack percentage. Clyde Harold posted an efficient 10 kills on 24 attempts, while Rio Victor and Bill Frederick Clarke had seven terminations each.

The Wildcats totaled 50 assists overall with Matt Reese (22) and Kirvan Hughes (20) combined for 42 of those 50 set assists. Varner led the Wildcats with four service aces.

C-SC was also very busy at the net defensively with one solo block and 19 block assists for a total of 10.5 team blocks. Victor and Zach Kowalewicz led the way with seven blocks each. Victor had one solo stuff and six block assists and Kowalewicz had seven block assists.

Henry Reeves finished the night with a team-best 11 digs.

The Wildcats have a quick-turnaround and will play at Dordt University on Saturday, March 21, in Sioux Center, Iowa. The first serve is slated for 2 p.m.
