Wildcats Take Penn to the Limit Beofre Falling in Five
The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball team gave William Penn University all it could handle before falling in five sets Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House.
Like in Friday night's loss to Grand View, the Wildcats came out with a strong hitting game and claimed the first set. However, the Statesmen found their legs and took the next two sets pretty much with ease.
Looking to stay alive, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the fourth set and went on to win the set to force a winner-take-all set.
C-SC led 6-4 midway through the final before the Statesmen reeled off five straight points to grab 9-6 lead. C-SC never got closer than three points the rest of the way in losing 21-25, 25-16, 25-13, 18-25, 15-10.
C-SC turned in a strong offensive game with a .261 overall attack percentage with 59 kills on 122 attempts and 22 errors.
Four different players reached double figures in kills for the Wildcats with Henry Reeves leading the squad with 18 terminations. Reeves committed just five errors on 41 attempts for a .317 attack percentage.
Rio Victor and Cooper Varner also had double-digit totals in kills with Victor registering 15 and Varner 13. Both players had attack percentages over.230 with Victor ending with a .270 percentage.
Zach Kowalewicz was the fourth player to reach double figures for C-SCm finishing with 10 terminations. Kowalewicz committed just three errors on 20 attempts for a .350 hitting percentage. Matt Reese tallied a season-best 45 set assists.
Kowalewicz was also a force at the net defensively, leading the Wildcats with seven block assists. Victor ended the day with six block assists as the Wildcats garnered 8.5 team blocks in the match.
In the back row, Victor and Cikeng Lee added 13 digs each to lead C-SC, which had 50 total digs in the match.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play their next two matches on the road beginning Tuesday night, March 10, at Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
