Wildcats Rally from 2-0 Deficit to Defeat Westminster in Five Sets

The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to claim a five set victory in its home opener against Westminster (Mo.) College Tuesday night at Charles Field House in Canton, Mo.

The Wildcats had their two lowest hitting attack percentage and recorded eight service errors in falling behind 2-0 in the match. However, C-SC regrouped, found their hitting stride and reduced the service miscues to a few to claim a 20-25, 26-28, 25-23, 25-17, 15-11 victory.

The Wildcats, who had their highest attack percentage in the final two sets, finished with a hitting percentage of .248 overall for the match. C-SC garnered attack percentages of .414 and .429 in the final two sets.

Rio Victor and Cooper Varner appeared in all five sets and led the winners with 15 kills each. Victor had a hitting percentage of .542 while Varner tallied a .242 attack percentage. The Wildcats totaled 57 terminations overall.

Malachi Gnade played the final three sets and garnered nine kills, while Zach Kowalewicz had seven terminations in the middle. Kirvan Hughes led all players with 50 set assists.

Defensively, the Wildcats recorded 12 team blocks while the Blue Jays managed just five team blocks. Kowalewicz led the way with six assisted blocks while Bill Clarke Frederick had four total blocks, including two solo stuffs.

In the back row, C-SC garnered 39 team digs, five fewer than Westminster, however, Cikeng Lee reached double figures with 11 digs.

The Wildcats (1-5) return to action next Tuesday, Feb.10, against Health Sciences and Pharmacy. The Heart of America Athletic Conference opener is slated to start at 7 p.m. inside Charles Field House.
