Lucas Smashes Own School Record in 5000

Culver-Stockton graduate student Logan Lucas prepped for the NAIA Outdoor Championships by smashing his own school record in the 5,000-meter run during the first day of the University of Saint Francis Fighting Chance meet in Joliet, Ill., Friday.

Lucas, who has qualified for the outdoor championships in the 3000-meter steeplechase, beat his previous mark in the 5,000 by a remarkable 26 seconds, finishing in a time of 15:04.27.

Lucas is scheduled to perform in the 3000 steeple on Wednesday, May 20, at the national meet in Asheville, N.C. Lucas is slated to compete at 7:55 p.m. EST. The finals of the steeplechase is set for Friday, May 22, at 2:45 p.m. EST.

Senior Drew Mallett also competed this weekend in the Fighting Chance meet, trying to improve his chances to qualify in the decathlon. Mallett, who has posted a high point total of 6,239 points, garnered just 5,889 points this weekend in finishing 5th overall. Mallet is ranked 19th in the NAIA and only the top 16 qualify. He will hold out hope some competitors drop the decathlon to compete in multiple events for their teams. The qualifying list will be official on Monday, May 11.
