Lucas Qualifies for National Meet with School Record Time in Steeplechase

Logan Lucas set a meet, facility and school record in earning a provisional qualifying time in the 3000-meter steeplechase in the Mustang Distance Carnival and Open at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lucas qualified for the 2026 NAIA Outdoor Championships by winning the steeplechase in a time of 9:21.11. That time beat his previous best time by eight seconds and he currently sits fifth in the NAIA and leads the Heart by five seconds. The time is also the 10th fastest time in conference history.

Drew Mallett had another big week of rt he Wildcats. He stated the week by competing in the Dutch Spring Multi at Central College in Pella, Iowa, Wednesday and Thursday. Mallett recorded 6,239 points to place fifth overall. That mark leads the Heart by 318 points and puts him ninth in the NAIA. At the Mustang Open, Mallett finished sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 3 3/4 inches.

Cade Packard turned in a pair of eighth place finishes in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, while Judah Rivers placed ninth in the 200.

Packard finished the 200 in a time of 23.11 and the 400 in a time of 50.86, while Rivers completed the 200 in a time of 23.17. Trayvon Louis earned an eight place finish in the 400-meteer hurdles with a time 1:03.62

Several other athletes set personal bests during he weekend.

Chase Lake set a PR in the 1500-meter run with a time of 17:57.87, while Shivneel Dutt set a season best in the same event with a time of 18:12.09.

In the field events, Jayden Ferdinand set a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 144 feet, six inches, while Mason Cygan hit a PR in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 6 3/4 inches.

The 4x100 relay team of Rivers, Mallett, Lucas Swetich and Ayden Hodges set a season best time in the relay with an eighth place finish in a time of 43.46 seconds.

The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the Wildcat Invitational next Saturday, April 18, at Richeson Track inside Ellison Poulton Stadium. The first events are set to begin at 10 a.m.
