Mallett Wins Decathlon, Ferdinand Set School Record Highlights Day at CMU Invitational
The Culver-Stockton men's track and field team competed in the two-day Central Methodist University Invitational April 2-3 in Fayette, Mo.
The meet was highlighted by by a pair of overall event champions, two school records and a handful of personal bests by the Wildcats.
Drew Mallett set the tone by dominating the decathlon with a meet best 6,133 points. Mallett won three of the 10 events and did not finish lower than fourth in any event in the lineup. The 6,133 points is the highest in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and fifth-highest in the NAIA this season.
Mallet won the pole vault with a personal best height of 12 feet, 7 1/2 inches. He also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.91 seconds, and the javelin throw with a toss of 147 feet, 11 inches.
The other event title came from Logan Lucas who captured the 5000-meter run in a time of 15:37.55.
Jayden Ferdinand turned a pretty good day with a school record in the hammer throw and a personal best in the discus.
Ferdinand placed 15th in the hammer throw but set the school record with a throw of 144 feet, six inches. The previous record was set in 2008 by Anthony Jahr, who set the mark at 141 feet. In addition, Ferdinand set a personal high in the discus with a throw of 135 feet, six inches, which is the fourth-highest mark in school history.
The other school record to fall came by way of the 4x800 relay team of Case Packard, Jailan Reynaga, Judah Rivers and Lucas. The team finished fourth in the event, finishing in a time of 8:14.89.
In other events, Chase Lake placed second overall in the 3000-meter steeple chase with a time of 11:27.41. Lucas Swetich set a personal best in the long jump with leap of 21 feet, placing 15th overall, and the 4x400 relay team of Packard, Rivers, Kylie Harper and Rivers, set a season best time of 3:22.38.
The Wildcats are scheduled to be in action again next week, April 10-11, at the Mustang Distance Carnival at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
