Lucas Qualifies in 3000 Steeplechase at Fighting Chance Invitational

Logan Lucas punched his ticket to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in his final attempt during the Fighting Chance Last Chance Meet at the University of Saint Francs Friday and Saturday in Joliet, Ill.

Lucas became the third male from the Culver-Stockton men's track and field team to qualify for the NAIA national meet when he bested the provisional qualifying time in the 3000-meter steeplechase Friday night.

Lucas, who had a season-best time of 9:43.84 in the steeplechase, needed to run Friday's race in 9:30 or faster to qualify. He did just that, finishing 12th overall in a time of 9:29.33 to set a personal and school record.

Jabez Rivers also competed this weekend and had two top six finishes in the hurdles. In the 100-meter hurdles, Rivers, who has qualified for the NAIA in the event, placed sixth in a time of 15.07 after qualifying for the final with a time of 15.05. Later in the day, Rivers placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.83 seconds.

Drew Mallett, who is trying to qualify for the NAIA meet in the decathlon competed in three events over the weekend in an attempt to stay active for his possible qualification to the national meet. Mallett ran the 200-meter dash and set a personal best time of 22.29 seconds in finishing 18th overall. He also competed in two field events, placing seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 9 inches, and 12th in the javelin with a throw of 139 feet, 10 inches.

In addition to Lucas and Rivers, Kenny Tucker has qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships in the 5000-meter race walk. Mallett is hoping to finish with a top 16 score in the decathlon to qualify in that event. He is currently ranked 14th through Friday's competition.
