Mallett Wins Decathlon at Heart Championships to Lead Men's Track and Field

Drew Mallett won the decathlon to lead the Culver-Stockton College men's track and field team at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships presented by WinWon Technologies at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.

Mallett, a sophomore from LaGrange, Mo. (Highland HS), totaled a personal high of 6,101 total points to outdistance runner-up Calvin Benson of Benedictine (Kan.) by 241 points. Mallett finished first in five of the 10 events, including the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, 400-meter run and and 110-meter hurdles.

Mallett's score of 6,101 is ranked 10th in the NAIA. He topped his previous high, which he set at the Central Methodist Invitational in March, by four points. The top 16 scores in the decathlon qualify for the NAIA Outdoor Championships later this month.

The Wildcats finished 11th among the 12 teams competing in the event with 20 total team points. Central Methodist won the team competition with 154.5 points.

Also scoring for the Wildcats were Jabez Rivers, who placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 seconds to earn four points.

Kenny Tucker and Logan Lucas earned sixth place finishes in their respective events. Tucker competed in the 500-meter race walk in a time of 27:34.41, while Lucas competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase and finished in a time of 9:43.31.

Rivers and Tucker have qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Mallett will find out if he finishes in the top 16 after events are completed next week.
