Men's Basketball Falls to Grand View in Conference Opener
The Culver-Stockton men's basketball team committed a season-high 21 turnovers in a 78-73 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Grand View University at Dave Sisam Arena Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Vikings took advantage of the Wildcat miscues, scoring 24 points off those mistakes. C-SC had 12 turnovers in falling behind 43-32 at the intermission. They added nine more turnovers in the second 20 minutes.
Despite the turnovers, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game in the second half and took a 67-65 lead on a 3-pointer by Ramzi Salem with six minutes remaining.
The lead was short-lived and the Vikings scored four straight points to take a 69-67 lead before Travis Green III drained two free throws to tie the game again at 69 with 2:38 left.
C-SC regained the lead on a basket by Damont Hanton with 1:35 to play; however, the Vikings again used a four-point run to take the lead for good with 58 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats, who shot 60 percent from the field in the game, made just one of four shots in the final minute while adding their final turnover.
Salem led the Wildcat five with 25 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Salem was 9-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc. Hanton had 16 markers while Green finished with 14 points.
Alex Jackson IV and Harrison Lewis garnered eight caroms each to lead the Wildcats on the glass. C-SC out-rebounded the Vikings 32-24 in the game. Lewis also had a game high five assists.
The Wildcats, currently 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Heart, is scheduled to play at Missouri Baptist University this Wednesday, Nov. 19, in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
