Norris, Keaton Named to NAIA All-America Team
Culver-Stockton College senior guards Marshawn Norris and Austin Keaton have been named to the 2013 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I Men's Basketball All-America team the NAIA announced Wednesday afternoon.
The selections are made by the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Committee and comprises a First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention Team. There are 10 members on each of the first three All-America teams.
Norris, a 5-foot-10 guard from Jackson, Mich. (Napoleon HS / Quincy University), was named to the second team after leading the Wildcats in scoring, assists and steals, averaging 18 points 6.7 assists and 2.23 steals per game. He was among the NAIA's leaders in multiple statistical categories including fourth in total assists (240); fourth in total 3-pointers made (118); fifth in assists per game (6.7) and sixth in 3-pointers per game (3.37).
Additionally, Norris was ranked seventh in total steals with 78 and eighth in total scoring with 631 points. The 631 points scored in a season is the third-highest single-season total in school history, trailing only John Ernst's 681 points in 1979-80 and Tony Robertson's 672 points in 1967-68.
Norris was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year earlier this season. He was just recently named to the national championships all-tournament team Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Keaton, a 6-foot-2 guard from Turlock, Calif. (Pitman HS / Modesto JC), was an honorable mention selection. He was second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game. He shot 46 percent from the field, including 39 percent from outside the 3-point arc, and 80 percent from the foul line, which was good for 31st in the NAIA.
In addition to free throw shooting, Keaton ranked 16th in the NAIA in 3-pointers made with 84 and 22nd in total scoring with 562 points. Keaton's 562 points this season is the seventh-highest in school history. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
Norris is just the second C-SC men's basketball player to earn first, second or third team honors from the NAIA. Dane Brooks was the first to do so when he garnered third team honors after the 2007-08 season.
The Wildcats finished the season with a school-record 26 victories (against nine losses) and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 76th Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history.
