Turnovers Lead to 21 William Penn Points in 48-21 loss the Statesmen
Turnovers continue to haunt the Culver-Stockton College football team.
William Penn University turned three Wildcat miscues, a fumble and two interceptions, into 21 points enroute to a 48-21 Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division victory Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The Statesmen led early in the second quarter when they picked off a Wildcat pass and then forced a sack and fumble on consecutive possessions to turn a 14-7 lead into a 28-7 advantage at the intermission.
The Wildcats moved the ball pretty effectively to start the game, taking the opening kickoff 73 yards on 10 plays before Tajh Washington scored on a two-yard run to make it 7-0.
However, the Statesmen answered on their opening possession to tie the game and went on to score on all four first half possessions to build a 21-point lead.
William Penn then scored on the opening possession of the second half to up the lead to 34-7 before the Wildcats answered with a 23-yard pass play from quarterback Liam Thornton to Kyle Dixon to make it 34-14.
The C-SC defense finally stopped the Statesmen attack by turning the ball over on downs at the Wildcat 34-yard line.
The Wildcat offense, trying to get the hosts back in the game, moved to the William Penn 26-yard line before the Statesmen defense stiffened and stopped the Wildcats with its second interception of the day in the end zone.
The Wildcats' final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter with Thornton connecting with Jaqorian Wiggles on a 23-yard catch and run for Thornton's second touchdown pass of the day.
Thornton finished the game with 21 completions on 38 attempts for 235 yards while also rushing seven times for 45 yards.
Dixon was again Thornton' main target with nine receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown. Wiggles had five catches for 56 yards and a score, while Washington led all C-SC rushers with 52 yards on 11 carries.
The Wildcat offense amassed 385 total yards, including 150 rushing yards, and 23 first downs in the game. Comparatively, William Penn totaled 486 yards overall, including 255 rushing yards, and 24 first downs.
C-SC, now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the North Division, is scheduled to play at Graceland University next Saturday, Oct. 4, in Lamoni, Iowa. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. The Yellowjackets fell to Clarke University 37-30 on Saturday.
