CULVER-STOCKTON WILDCAT ATHLETICS

Offense holds off defense in spring game

The Culver-Stockton College offense nipped the defense 56-49 in the annual spring football game at Ellison Poulton Stadium Saturday morning.

Playing two 15-minute quarters and under a modified scoring system, the offense accumulated 347 yards and scored two touchdowns and a field goal against the Wildcat defense.

Quarterbacks Dan Wernick and Jake Harnacke performed admirably in the game, completing a combined 20 passes on 29 attempts.

Wernick went 13 of 18 for 126 yards while Harnacke was seven of 11 for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Both of Harnacke's touchdown passes went to tight end Michael Hall. Hall caught a three-yard pass and a 10-yard pass for touchdowns. He finished the game with five receptions for 68 yards.

Justin Hutchings led all running backs with 68 yards rushing on 18 carries. Jay Shepherd added nine carries for 35 yards before an injury forced him to the sidelines.

Jordan Cox, who played in the defensive backfield a year ago, led all receivers with 74 yards on five receptions. Stephon Watson recorded eight catches for 59 yards.

On defense, Bret Holtrop and Nick Still paced the Wildcats with 13 tackles each. Adrian Allen, who played running back last year, intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.

The Wildcats are scheduled to open the 2010 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Central Methodist University at 1 p.m.
