Six football players recognized by HAAC

CANTON, Mo. -- Culver-Stockton College had six football players recognized by the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) during the league's end of season coaches meeting Sunday in Fayette, Mo.

Junior linebacker Brent Holtrop (Frisco, Texas / Centennial HS) was the only player to garner all-conference accolades as he was named to the second team defense for his play during the 2009 season.

Five other players, tight end Dustin Boyd (Winfield, Mo. / Winfield HS), safety Juan Martin (St. Louis, Mo. / McCluer North HS), running back Justin Hubbard (Florissant, Mo. / Hazelwood West), and offensive linemen Justin Shawe (Warrenton, Mo. / Warren County HS) and Alex Thull (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett HS), were honorable mention selections.

Holtrop recorded a team-high 103 tackles (56 solo) during the season, leading the HAAC in that category, averaging 10.3 stops per game. He also led the Wildcats with eight tackles for loss, three sacks and three forced fumbles. Holtrop also recorded one fumble recovery.

Boyd, a senior, played in nine games and tallied 13 receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown during the season. He averaged 14.1 yards per catch, including a long of 60, and 22.9 yards per game.

Martin, a senior, was second on the team and fifth in the HAAC with 86 tackles in 2009, averaging 8.6 stops per game. He recorded 47 solo tackles and 2 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. In addition, Martin led the Wildcats with six passes defended, had two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Hubbard, a freshman, led the Wildcats in rushing with 423 yards on 98 carries and two rushing touchdowns. Hubbard, who became the starter in week six, averaged 4.3 yards per attempt and 42.3 yards per game.

Shawe, a red-shirt junior who was an honorable mention selection in 2008, started all 10 games for the Wildcats. He participated in 545 offensive plays and committed just three penalties on the season.

Thull, a sophomore, participated in 549 plays this season. He committed just three penalties and allowed a 3 sacks this season.
