Evangel slips past Wildcats in season finale
Evangel University got a 15-yard touchdown pass from Freddie Brown to Tommy Meyer with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Crusaders to an 18-14 victory over Culver-Stockton Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The Crusaders trailed 14-11 when Cedric Reese recovered a Joe Sims fumble at the Wildcat 41-yard line. Meyer gained 43 yards on the drive, rushing for 19 yards and catching two passes for 23 yards, including the final 15 yards for the game-winner.
After Evangel took its initial drive of the game to kick a field goal and take a 3-0 lead, the Wildcats used a fumble recovery by Patrick Koons at the Crusader 20-yard line to set up their first touchdown.
After Sims gained 16 yards on two rushes, senior Josh Roberts rumbled in from four yards out to give the Wildcats a 6-3 lead.
The extra point was blocked by the Crusaders; however, the Wildcats' Josh Arnsman recovered the ball and scored the apparent two-point conversion.
The officials huddled and initially ruled that it was just a one point score, making the score 7-3, but after halftime ruled that it was a two-point conversion and gave Culver-Stockton an 8-3 advantage.
Evangel took a 9-8 lead on a one-yard run by Brown with 9:23 remaining in the third quarter after a 10-play, 55 yard drive, but missed the two-point conversion.
The Wildcats roared right back and scored on a 13-yard reverse to Kameron Williams that culminated a seven-play 50-yard drive to make the score 14-9 Wildcats.
Again, the two-point conversion proved exciting as Jake Harnacke attempted a pass to the near corner of the endzone, but it was picked off by Evangel's John-Michael Robertson and returned for a two-point defensive safety and a 14-11 Culver-Stockton lead.
The Wildcats outgained the Crusaders 245-232, including 148 to 132 yards on the ground.
Culver-Stockton (0-10) had a balanced rushing attack as five ball carriers gained at least 22 yards with Roberts gaining 35 yards on seven attempts and Sims ending the day with 33 yards on eight attempts to lead the way.
Harnacke finished the day with 14 completions for 97 yards passing, but he was picked off twice, though the second one came on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game.
Defensively, Brent Holtrop led the Wildcats with 12 tackles while Martin had 10 tackles. Adam Gunterman added eight stops while Travis Stephenson recorded seven tackles.
