Another near miss for Wildcat gridders
For the second consecutive week, the Culver-Stockton College football team saw its chance for a victory end inside the opponent's 10-yard line.
Last week, the Wildcats were stopped on fourth and 2 at the Graceland 8-yard line with 30 seconds left in the game. This week, the Wildcats were again stopped at the eight, only it was William Jewell who came away with the victory and kept the Wildcats winless on the season.
Trailing late in the fourth quarter and facing fourth and 7 from the Cardinal eight-yard line, the Wildcats' Jake Harnacke lofted a pass toward Joe Sims, who seemed to be alone in the end zone. However, William Jewell's Mike Heggie came out of nowhere to knock the ball away and preserve a 20-13 victory for the Cardinals.
The Wildcats had closed to within 20-13 on a 12-yard pass from Kameron Williams to StacJuan Kelly with 7:26 remaining in the game. That score was set up by a fumble recovery by Juan Martin at the Cardinal 27-yard line after Brian Richardson stripped the receiver of the ball.
Jewell scored 10 points off of two Wildcat turnovers that helped build a 20-6 advantage after three quarters.
The Cardinals jumped out in front 7-0 after taking the opening kickoff and marching 65 yards on nine plays culminating on a Jake Lynch 8-yard TD run.
The Wildcats answered right back on their opening possession, moving 60 yards in 14 plays before Harnacke found Kelly in the back of the endzone for 10-yard TD reception. The extra point was botched and the score remained 7-6.
Jewell added a field goal to make it 10-6 on their second possession, and it appeared the Wildcats would answer. However, running back Justin Hubbard fumbled at the Cardinal 27-yard line and the Cardinals returned it to the C-SC 42.
Five plays later, WJC's Drew Whitman found Daniel Johnson with a 29-yard scoring pass and a 17-6 halftime advantage.
The Cardinals added a another field goal in the third quarter after another Hubbard fumble, this time after he ran into his own teammate after a big run.
Sims finished the day with 79 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Hubbard finished with 43 yards on eight attempts.
Harnacke ended the day with 115 yards passing on 11 of 15 accuracy. His main targert was David Pardun, who had 46 yards on three receptions.
Martin led the Wildcat defense with 12 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass defended. Leading tackler Brent Holtrop had eight stops.
The Wildcats conclude the 2009 season next Saturday, Nov. 14, at home against Evangel University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
