CULVER-STOCKTON WILDCAT ATHLETICS

No. 3 Lindenwood shows its might against Wildcats

CANTON, Mo. --- Lindenwood University showed why it has been ranked third in the NAIA Top 25 national poll all season in Saturday's 67-10 victory over Culver-Stockton at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Lions rushed for four touchdowns, passed for four touchdowns, and returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns to improve to 7-0 overall and 7-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Wildcats drop to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in the HAAC.

After the two teams exchanged turnovers on their initial drives of the game, Lindenwood jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Denodus O'Bryant midway through the first quarter.

The Wildcats, helped by three Lindenwood penalties, responded with a nine play, 56-yard drive that ended with a 35-yard field goal from Will Ryan to cut the margin to 7-3.

However, that momentum was short-lived as O'Bryant took the ensuing kickoff and scampered 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-3.

The Lions added two more touchdowns in the second quarter before the Wildcats' Justin Hubbard broke loose for a 36-yard scoring run to make the score 27-10 with 2:45 left in the first half.

That is all the Wildcats would do offensively as the Lions tightened the defense in the second half. After accumulating 159 yards in the first half, Culver-Stockton managed just 53 yards in the second half.

Hubbard led the Wildcats with 44 yards rushing on nine carries. Quarterback Dan Wernick added 40 yards on 11 carries while Josh Roberts totaled 37 yards on 20 carries.

Wernick threw for 83 yards on 7 of 17 passing and he was picked off one time, the first interception by a Wildcat quarterback in 120 passes this season, and 136 passes dating back to last season.

Defensively, Juan Martin led the Wildcats with 12 tackles while Brent Holtrop, the Wildcats' leading tackler, had 10 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Wildcats return to action next Saturday, Oct. 24, against Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Raven Stadium.
