Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Loss at Peru State

The Culver-Stockton baseball team suffered a pair of losses to begin a four-game series at Peru State College Friday afternoon in Peru, Neb.

In game one, the Wildcats committed two errors in the sixth inning, leading to two unearned  Bobcat runs as the hosts overcame a 3-2 deficit to earn a 5-4 victory. In the nightcap, C-SC was shutout for the fifth time this season in a 3-0 setback.

The opener was a game where the Wildcats would score in the top of an inning and the Bobcats would answer right back.

C-SC opened the scoring in t he first inning when Harry Oden scored on a passed ball. Peru State answered with a run in the bottom of the first after a double and a single after two were out.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the fourth inning on a Cooper Kiel solo home run. However, the Bobcats knotted the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

General Schofield singled with one out in the sixth and stole second as Kiel struck out for the second out in the inning. Ethan Weber picked up Kiel with a two-out single to score Schoolfield and five C-SC a 3-2 lead.

However, three singles and two Wildcat errors led to three runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the hosts a 5-3 lead.

C-SCdidn't go quietly n the seventh as Jack Linenfelser reached first on an one-out error. After Oden fly out for the second out, Jeremiah Morris reached base on an error by the third baseman, allowing Linenfelser to come around to score and Morris to reach second base. 

With the tying run at second, Schofield flew out to end the game. The Wildcats fell to 1-9 in one-run games this season.

In the nightcap, Oden went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Brandon Diaz Valentin collected two hits in three-at bats but couldn't dent home plate in the 3-0 loss. Peru State scored two runs in the first inning and an insurance run in the sixth to account for all the scoring.

Ryan Jung suffered the loss after he went the distance for the Wildcats, scattering five hits and allowing three runs while striking out two and not walking a batter.

The two teams are slated to complete their series on Saturday, April 11, with another doubleheader against the Bobcats. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
