Late Inning Misery Haunts Wildcats in DH Loss to Mount Mercy

Late inning misery continued for the Culver-Stockton baseball team as Mount Mercy University swept a doubleheader Sunday at Nichols Field to claim the final three games of the four-game Heart of America Athletic Conference series.

The Mustangs scored all nine of their runs in the final three innings of a 9-2 victory in game one. Then, in the nightcap, Mount Mercy plated all six runs of a 6-3 victory in the final two innings to capture the sweep.

The first game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Mustangs finally got to C-SC starter Aaron Barr for three runs on five hits. Mount Mercy added another run in the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

The Wildcats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Brian Diaz Valentin and an error by the Mustangs on a ball hit by Kannon Kirk.

However, C-SC's bullpen could hold the deficit at two runs as the Mustangs scored five times in in the tp of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

C-SC finished with just three hits in the game while striking out 11 times against MMU starter Tyler Nagelbach.

In game two, C-SC starter Brayden Prott held the Mustangs scoreless for the first five innings before the visitors tallied three unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Prott, who allowed seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts, started the seventh inning but another error and a walk put runners at first and second.

After a strikeout, a single chased Prott from the game with the bases loaded still trailing 3-0. C-SC reliever Carter Jones was greeted with a runs-scoring single before a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly game the Mustangs a 6-0 lead.

The Wildcat offense finally woke up in the bottom of the seventh as Wyatt Wright reached on an error and pinch hitter Cooper Gillette was hit by a pitch. After an out was recorded, Jack Linenfelsor singled to load the bases.

Ethan Weber followed with a RBI single for C-SC's first run, and then a second run scored on a wild pitch. Harry Oden doubled in two runs to make the score 6-4 and bring the tying run to the plate. However, pinch hitter General Schofield grounded out to second base to end the game.

Oden was the only Wildcat hitter to record a multiple hit game, finishing 3-for-4 with the two RBI.

The Wildcats continue conference play Tuesday, March 24, with a doubleheader at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo, The first game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
