Baseball Goes 1-3 at Babe Howard Classic

The Culver-Stockton baseball team salvaged one game at the Babe Howard Classic held at USA Stadium Saturday and Sunday in Millington, Tenn.

The Wildcats played four games during the two day event and registered their only victory in the weekend finale against Tennessee Wesleyan University Sunday behind a complete-game five hitter from left-hander Isaiah Naylor.

Naylor evened his record at 1-1, after allowing five singles and two earned runs while striking out eight and not walking a batter. Naylor needed 98 pitches to finish what he started.

Offensively, the Wildcats collected seven hits and were issued five walks. Seven different players recorded a hit for C-SC, which was led by Kannon Kirk with two runs batted in. General Schofield scored two runs. Cooper Kiel, Brandon Diaz Valentin and Jeremiah Morris all had one RBI each.

Earlier in the day, the Wildcats scored first in the second inning of a 4-1 loss to Shawnee State (Ohio) when Cooper Gillette drove home Morris who had reached on an error.

The Bears scored three times in the fourth inning on three hits, three walks and a hit batter. Shawnee added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

C-SC was limited to five hits in the game with Ethan Weber providing a double for the only extra base hit.

On Saturday, the Wildcats collected four total hits in the two games, falling to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 8-1 and Northwestern Ohio 11-0.

C-SC accrued three hits against Freed-Hardemen with Schofield providing the only run on a solo home run in the second inning.

Against Northwestern Ohio, C-SC was hitless through three innings before Harry Oden led off the fourth inning with a double. However, Oden was stranded as Northwestern pitchers retired the next 12 C-SC batters to end the game.

C-SC (3-6) is scheduled to play a four-game series this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, at Olivet Nazarene University. Doubleheaders will be played, beginning at noon each day at the Bradley Sports Complex in Bradley, Ill.
