Wildcats Outslug Clarke to Earn Split of Four-Game Series

A six-run fifth inning in the second game lifted the Culver-Stockton baseball team to a 13-11 victory over Clarke University and a split of the Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Speigel Park in Pest, Iowa, Sunday.

Clarke held off a late Wildcat rally in the first game to claim a 10-9 victory and ensure a split of the weekend four-game series. C-SC is in a three-way tie with Clarke and William Penn for the eighth and final playoff spot for the upcoming conference tournament.

The Wildcats, who rallied from a 9-1 deficit in the opener before rallying to within a run late, found themselves trailing 11-6 after four innings in the nightcap.

However, in the fifth inning, C-SC's potent C-SC came to life by plating six runs on four base hits and two Pride errors.

Jordan Scott started the uprising by reaching on a fielding error by the Clarke third baseman. Bryan Barreto was hit by a pitch to to put runners at first and second when Jeremiah Morris doubled to score Scott.

After Ryan Osso struck out, Wyatt Wright drilled a double to right-center to plate courtesy runner Eli Friend and Morris to make the score 11-9.

The Wildcats tied the game when the next batter, Noble Oxford, hit the first of his two home runs  to tie the game at 11.

Kannon Kirk kept the rally going with a single up the middle. Kirk stole second before Jaison Andujar popped out for the second out of the inning. However, Tristan Meny then hit a ground ball to first, which was booted, allowing Kirk to come around to score and give the Wildcats a 12-11 lead.

Relief pitcher Gavin Reames, the Wildcats' fourth pitcher of the game, stymied the Clarke offense for the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing no hit or runs while walking one and striking out two to earn the victory.

Offensively, Oxford finished the game with three hits, four runs scored and three runs batted in. Morris went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Andujar was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in with a triple and a home run. Wright registered three runs batted in in the game.

In the opener, C-SC found itself trailing 9-1 after four innings before a five-run fifth inning made it a game.

In the comeback fifth inning, Osso and Dallas Slayton both reached with singles to start the frame. After Oxford struck out, Kirk delivered a run-scoring single to score Osso and send Slayton to second.

Andujar struck out for the second out, but Meny picked him up with a double to right-center to score Slayton and move Kirk to third.

Jordan Scott walked to load the bases and Barreto made the Pride pay with a two-run single to center. Harry Oden followed with the Wildcats' sixth hit of the inning to score Scott and pull the Wildcats to within 9-6.

After holding Clarke scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, C-SC plated two more runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Kirk to make the score 9-8.

Clarke added an insurance run in the sixth inning to up the lead to 10-8, which came in handy when Barreto hit a solo home run in the seventh.

Kirk and Barreto led the 10-hit Wildcat attack with two hits and three runs batted in each. Osso also collected multiple hits in the game, finishing with two safeties, including a double.

C-SC is scheduled to play its final home series of the season this Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, against Missouri Valley College at Nichols Field. The first pitch each day is slated for 1 p.m.
