Wildcats Rally Late to Earn Split with Grand View

The Culver-Stockton baseball team overcame a 5-1 deficit in the second game of Sunday's Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader with Grand View University to earn a split at Fred Niemann, Jr. Field in Quincy, Ill.

The Wildcats plated four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning before hanging on in the seventh to preserve a 7-6 victory. Grand View limited C-SC to two hits in the opener to claim a 6-0 victory.

In the decisive fifth inning in game two, Tristan Meny started the four-run rally with a one out solo home run. After Jordan Scott fly out for the second out, Bryan Barreto singled and Harry Oden walked to bring the tying run to the plate. 

Jeremiah Morris delivered with a line drive three-run homer over the left-center field fence to tie the game at 5-5.

C-SC starter Clayton Woods shut the door on the Vikings in the sixth inning to set the stage for the game-winning rally in the bottom half of the frame.

Kannon Kirk and Jaison Andujar registered back-to-back one out singles to put runners at first and second. Meny followed by lacing a sharp single to right field to score Kirk. Andujar went to third when the right fielder bobbled the ball.

Scott added the all important insurance run with a solid single to center to give the Wildcats their two-run advantage.

C-SC would need that extra run as the Vikings, who had their 18-game winning streak snapped with the loss, didn't go quietly.

Wildcat closer Isaiah Naylor allowed one single and then hit a batter to put runners at first and second with none out. A sacrifice bunt by the Vikings put the tying runs in scoring position with one out.

Naylor walked the next batter to load the bases and then a wild pitch advanced all three runners to bring the Vikings to within a run and put the go ahead runners at second and third.

Burt Naylor hung tough and induced a ground ball to Kirk at third base. Kirk tagged the runner trying to go back to third and fired to Meny at first for the double play to end the game.

Meny finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the offense. Noble Oxford collected two hits,,including a solo home run, while Morris added a hit in addition to his three-run homer.

Scott and Barreto also had two hits as the Wildcats banged out 13 hits.in the game to support the strong pitching of Woods.

Woods pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs, to earn his fifth win of the season. He struck out two and walked three.

In the first game, C-SC was limited to singles by Kirk and Barreto by Grand View hurler Kaleb Krier. Krier walked one and struck out four in improving to 6-0 on the season.

C-SC starter Davin Meier pitched well despite the non-support. He went allowed just two run over the six innings before tiring in the seventh inning. Meier finished with 6 1/3 innings pitched, scattering nine hits and six runs. He struck out four and walked four.

The two teams are scheduled to conclude the four-game series on Tuesday, April 8, with a twin bill at Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
