Wildcats Wallop Yellowjackets in Doubleheader Sweep
The Culver-Stockton College baseball team broke out the whooping sticks in a doubleheader sweep of Graceland University Monday afternoon at Chase Stadium in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Wildcats registered a 27-5 drubbing in the first game, which featured a 10-run second inning by C-SC. The 27 runs were the most scored by the Wildcats since a 37-8 victory over Webster University in 1998.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats broke open a 1-1 game late by scoring seven times over the final three innings to post an 8-1 victory.
C-SC, which has won five of its last six conference games, improved to 13-24 overall and 9-12 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Dax Flowerree provided much of the offense in game one for the Wildcats. Flowerree went 4-for-5 with two grand slam home runs, a double, and 11 runs batted in to lead the 25-hit attack.
Keli'i Price joined Flowerree in the lineup with four hits and adding three runs batted in, while Brandon Aragon and Ryan Osso collected three hits each. Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit in the game.
Davin Meier pitched the first four innings and earned the victory on the mound. Meier scattered six hits, allowed three runs while walking one and fanning one.
Braden Taylor hurled the final three innings and earned his first save of the season. Taylor gave up five hits and two runs while issuing a walk and striking out three.
In game two, Andrew Fay opened the game by reaching on a two-base error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Collin Hall.
After Graceland tied the game in the second inning, the score stayed tied until the Wildcats got a sacrifice fly from Hall to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
C-SC added two more runs in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Alex Harbin and a run-scoring single by Price, and then added two more in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Aragon and a two-run single by Osso.
Nicolas Goebert pitched four shutout innings in relief to earn the victory. He allowed four hits in his four frames, striking out two. Stefan Stockwell started and went three full innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run.
Price and Osso led the offense with two hits each.
The Wildcats and Yellowjackets are slated to conclude the four-game series Tuesday afternoon, April 18, with another doubleheader at Chase Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
