Baseball Splits Sunday, Loses Series to IU-South Bend
The Culver-Stockton baseball team split a doubleheader with Indiana University-South Bend Sunday afternoon in O'Fallon, Mo., winning the first game 11-4 before dropping the series finale 9-8 in nine innings.
The Wildcats banged out 13 hits in the game one victory to support starting pitcher Josh McPheron.
McPheron hurled the first six innings, scattering five hits and allowing four runs. He walked two and struck out two to earn his first victory of the season.
Offensively, Keli'i Price collected three hits, scored two runs and added a run batted in to lead the offense. Caden Power and Andrew Fay each registered two hits and two RBI, while Jordan Scott joined in the fun with two runs batted in. Alex Harbin also had two hits for the Wildcats.
In the nightcap, C-SC rallied from behind on two different occasions before succumbing in extra innings. The Wildcats trailed 7-2 after three innings before scoring five times in the fifth inning to tie the game at 7-7.
The Titans regained the lead in the sixth, however, the Wildcats got a Scott solo home run in the bottom of the inning to eve things up one more time.
C-SC put the winning run on base in the seventh inning and advanced hime to third with one out, but could not chase him home and the game went to extra frames.
After IU-South Bend took the lead in the ninth, C-SC's Harbin walked with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Power struck out to end the game.
Scott was outstanding in defeat with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI. No other Wildcat had more than one hit in the game, but Bryan Barreto did drive home two runs with a single in the big five-run fifth inning rally.
The Wildcats, who dropped three of four to the Titans this weekend, are currently 4-6 overall. C-SC is scheduled to play a four-game series with Concordia (Neb.) next weekend, Feb. 25-26, in Fort Scott, Kan. The first game is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday at the LaRoche Complex.
