Baseball Splits First Two games at Graceland

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team opened its four-game series with Graceland University Friday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at North Park in Lamoni, Iowa.

The Wildcats got a complete-game shutout from Brock Kartheiser in winning the opener 4-0. However, C-SC was held to seven hits and two first-inning runs in a 3-2 loss in the nightcap.

In the opener, Kartheiser scattered six hits, all singles, in earning his first victory of the season. He struck out four and walked one while also hitting two batters.

The Wildcat offense matched the Yellowjacket output of six hits with Nay Seldomridge collecting two of them. Brandon Cotter, Alonso Ruz, Dominick Minogue and Jake Hillier provided the runs batted in.

In game two, C-SC jumped on Graceland starter Jeremy Barnes with two runs in the top of the first inning as Seldomridge doubled home Cotter and Ruz, who had each singled. However, Barnes allowed just four hits the rest of the game in winning for the third time this season.

Daniel Smith went 5 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. He walked four, struck out three and hit a batter in falling to 3-3 on the season.

The Wildcats and Yellowjackets are slated to complete the four-game series Saturday afternoon with another doubleheader in Lamoni, Iowa. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
