The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team stopped a three-match winless streak with a 2-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Avila University Wednesday night at NX Level Field in Canton.
The Wildcats, who peppered the Eagle goal with 23 shots in the game, had several good opportunities in the opening minutes of the game.
However, the score was still scoreless until the seventh minute when Matteo Ghezzi sent a cross from the left of the penalty area and found the head of Lucas Berte, who re-directed it past Eagle goalkeeper Patrick Elliott for his third goal of the season.
With that goal holding up through the first half, C-SC added an insurance goal in the 54th minute of the game when Pierce Robinson sent a long pass to Berte near the right post on the goal line and Berte caromed back to Mackenzie Northern who beat Elliott for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Berte and Robinson were both credited with an assist.
That goal give Northern 28 career goals and he is now just one goal from tying Luke Schneider for second place on the school's all-time scoring list, and three goals from matching Jacob Schneider, who holds the all-time record with 31 career goals.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Luciani faced only five shots, none on goal, as he registered his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
The Wildcats put seven of their 23 shots on target and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks on the evening. The fouls with even at 12 each, but the Eagles were issued three cautions during the game. Avila's head coach was given a red card in after the game was finished.
