Leah Miller netted a goal and two assists as the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team blanked Avila University 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at NX Level Field in Canton.
Miller, the reigning Heart Offensive Player of the Week, got things started in the 39th minute when she flipped a pass to Janelle St. Pierre who slipped past Eagle goalkeeper Stacey Schimmel for her fifth goal of the season.
Miller added her second assist in the 54th minute with a slick pass across the goalie box to Heather Pendegraft who finished for her second tally of the season. The assists were Miller's fourth and fifth helpers of the season.
Miller finished off her three-point night with her 10th goal of the season when she won a battle for a loose ball with Schimmel and placed it in the back of the net in the 79th minute of the game. The goal was the 24th of Miller's career, which moved her past Sarah Mueller for fourth place on the school's all-time goals list.
Kehley Bitzas, the current defensive player of the week in the Heart, recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 11th of her career. Only a sophomore, Bitzas is tied for second with Sarah Kester for most shutouts in a career.
Bitzas saw only six shots the entire night and only one that was on goal. The save she made was an acrobatic one that came late in the game to help preserve the shutout and improve the Wildcats unbeaten streak to four games.
C-SC dominated possession and out-shot the winless Eagles 18-6 though the corner kick totals were even at five each. Only nine fouls were called in the game with five going against the visiting Eagles.
The Wildcats, now 8-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Heart, is scheduled to travel to Atchison, Kan., this Saturday, Oct. 14, to play 16th-ranked Benedictine College. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the BC Soccer Complex.
